Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to connect and manage the Apple iPad Wi-Fi networks. You will also find instructions on how to troubleshoot or fix common iPad WiFi problems and issues.
Join the Wi-Fi Network
First you need to make sure that the WiFi is enabled and that you are connected to a specific WiFi network. To do this on your iPad go to Settings > Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi is off, turn it on by tapping the ON/OFF button. When you set the button to ON, wait a moment as iPad detects all available WiFi networks in range.
Once the iPad detects all the WiFi networks in the range, they are all displayed under under Settings > Wi-Fi > Choose a Network. Just tap the Wi-Fi network that you want your iPad to connect to. If the Wi-Fi network is not displayed on iPad as an available option, it may be a "closed" or "private" network.
Once you join a Wi-Fi network, iPad automatically connects to it the next time whenever the network is in range. If more than one previous network is in range, iPad joins the one most recently used.
Set iPad to ask if you want to join a new WiFi network
When your iPad is not in the range of the previous connected WiFi network, then you can set the iPad to prompt you to join a new WiFi network that i sin the range. On your iPad choose Wi-Fi, then turn the option "Ask to Join Networks" ON or OFF. When you try to access the Internet (using Safari or Mail) and you aren’t in range of a Wi-Fi network you previously used, iPad looks for another network. iPad displays a list of all the available Wi-Fi networks that you can choose from. Networks that require a password show a lock icon.
If "Ask to Join Networks" is off, you must manually join a network to connect to the Internet when a previously used network or a cellular data network isn’t available.
Forget a WiFi network, so iPad doesn’t join it automatically
To prevent the iPad from connecting to a previously connected WiFi Network you can do so by choosing "Forget this Network" option under Wi-Fi and then tapping the ">" icon next to a network you’ve joined before.
Connect to Secured/Private/Password protected WiFi network
Some WiFi networks are secured/private meaning, they are password protected and you will need to have a password to access that network. Such WiFi networks are displayed with a padlock icon next to the WiFi network name.
If you receive an error while joining a password-protected Wi-Fi network:- Type slowly to verify you are entering the correct password.
- If you cannot tap Join, the password is too short for that Wi-Fi network.
- If you don't know the password, check with the Wi-Fi network administrator.
Check iPad WiFi Connection
You can check the iPad Wi-Fi signal strength in the status bar or Wi-Fi menu. The more bars the stronger the signal and faster is the internet access.
If your iPad shows only have a single bar it means that the signal is weak. Also if you still cannot locate your Wi-Fi network in spite of being in the range do the following. Consider moving closer to the Wi-Fi access point or router. Also try to avoid potential sources of interference that can affect a Wi-Fi signal, such as concrete walls and microwave ovens. Next, check your connection by using Safari to open a web page.
When using some public Wi-Fi networks, Safari may display a web page that allows you to sign in to use the service. Check this web page for additional information on signing into or subscribing to the Wi-Fi network service at that location.
Check iPad Wi-Fi network
Sometimes you cannot access the internet even thought it seems like you are connected and the there is strong WiFi signal. In this case, you will need to verify the WiFi network that you are connected to.- Check the cable connection to your Wi-Fi access point or router.
- Ensure you are connecting to the correct Wi-Fi network, and not another nearby Wi-Fi network.
- If you can't identify your Wi-Fi network due to other networks with similar names nearby, contact the ISP or manufacturer for assistance in naming your Wi-Fi network.
Reset iPad Wi-Fi network settings
To reset your network settings, tap Settings > General, then tap Reset > Reset Network Settings. When the device restarts, try to locate and join the Wi-Fi network again.
Note that resetting the iPad WiFi Settings will clear your current network settings, including saved networks, Wi-Fi passwords, and VPN settings.
Troubleshooting iPad WiFi problems and issues
Sometimes you might run into some problems with the WiFi networks. Here are some common issues.
Unable to locate a nearby Wi-Fi network
If you know there is a nearby Wi-Fi network, but you are unable to locate it on the Settings > Wi-Fi screen:- Move closer to the Wi-Fi router or hotspot.
- If you are using a personal Wi-Fi network, verify the Wi-Fi router is connected to power and turned on.
- Wi-Fi networks configured as "closed" or "private" do not broadcast the network name to Wi-Fi devices.
- Join a "closed" or "private" network by tapping Settings > Wi-Fi > Other and entering the Wi-Fi network name, security, and password.
Low or Weak iPad Wi-Fi signal strength
- Move closer to the Wi-Fi router or hotspot.
- Check for any sources of potential interference like concrete walls and microwaves.
- Remove any cases or attachments on your device that could interfere with a Wi-Fi signal.
Unable to access the Internet while connected
- If you are using a commercial Wi-Fi network that requires a special login or subscription, see this article from Apple for more information.
- If you are in a location with multiple Wi-Fi networks, verify that you are selecting the correct network.
- Verify that the iPad Wi-Fi network settings are correct:
- Tap Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Locate the Wi-Fi network you are currently using and select it.
- You can configure network-specific settings, including IP address, DNS, and Search Domain settings.
- Use "Forget this Network" to reset settings for this particular Wi-Fi network, including the password. This is also useful if you identify a network issue and want to prevent the device from automatically using this network in the future.
- Use "Renew Lease" to acquire new IP address, DNS, and Search Domain information from the Wi-Fi network.
- Note: If the Wi-Fi network uses MAC address filtering, you will need to add the MAC address to the access list for the Wi-Fi router. The MAC address for your device is listed as the Wi-Fi Address in Settings > General > About.
- Reset network settings by selecting Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Note: This will reset all network settings, including passwords, VPN, and APN settings. - Restart the device by holding the power button until "slide to power off" appears. Slide to power off your device. When it is off, press the power button to turn it back on.
- Cellular Data Connected Device only: If you continue to experience issues, consider turning off Wi-Fi and using the cellular data connection instead of Wi-Fi.

Here's what worked for me:
Turned off iPad (turned it back on, of course)
reset network settings
reset the lease
Good luck!
That worked for my iPad too! Thanks.
Mine is still not connecting! very frustrated!
I'm frustrated too. It's telling me that my password is incorrect but I know that it isn't.
Same issues here. I know the wifi works as it is fine in my office.
Same here. It just disconnects then says that it is unable to connect but then suddenly works. iPaid way too much iDough for this thing not to work right.
Nothing worked for me. I KNOW my password. And in case I didn't, I logged into my router and checked that I had recorded it properly. I had. Something rotten in the state of Apple.
Taking mine back to the store tomorrow!! Only had it 4 days and after day 2, wifi stopped working......sooooooo disappointed!
This apple is half baked. I wasted my money!
power off and on works for networks that previously worked fine.
Tried all of the above still couldnt get it to work - even though both my iphone and mac would connect fine. Reset router and that worked
Turning up the brightness worked for me. I have been fighting this issue and heard about the brightness bar resolution but thought it was half baked. But it actually worked!?
try putting in your WEP code, rather than your password. I kept trying my password but ipad would tell me it was wrong, so it finally occured to me that it wanted a different password, i.e., the WEP key. It worked for me
We found out that the iPad automatically uses uppercase letters when you are first putting your info in (eg for email), you have to tell it to use lowercase.
thank you 'anonymous said...' your advice about reseting worked for me!
I was miffed till I reset my router. I guess the connection was hung up. This pad keeps asking me for my password every time it times out. Any thoughts?
Well I am stunned! Like others here I had dismissed the Brightness fix, but after all else failed I tried it. And it worked!
For the record, my iPad was connecting to my router but would not browse internet. It would however see streamed video from my iMac via the same wireless network (i.e. using the router, not a direct connection to the iMac)
Very strange...
Brightness fix? Someone please explain?
None of the above has worked for me. My iPad says at the top left of the screen that it has full connection but when I try to access the internet or any apps that use the internet, it says no internet connection is found and gives you the option to re-connect. As I have an allowed list for my wi-fi connection, I have tried to delete it off of the allowed list and add it again but that hasn't worked either. Unfortunately, I can't return my iPad so what a rip off Apple has proved itself to be. How stupid to put out expensive products that don't live up to do what they should.
Details of the Brightness fix:
Apple itself has suggested to increase the brightness of the iPad as one of the fixes for Wi-Fi issue.
Apple says "Check to see if your screen brightness is set to the lowest level by going to Settings > Brightness & Wallpaper. If brightness is at lowest level, increase it by moving the slider to the right and set auto brightness to off"

Thank-you for the help! Unfortunately, the brightness fix hasn't worked for me as I already had it on full. Thank-you anyway for the website though!
Kept saying password was wrong for WiFi. We connected the IPad directly to the laptop with the cord and it automatically connected. Then it hit my daughter, "Oh yeah, thats what I had to do before." She had tried to connect to another network while out of town last night and after she got home is when she kept getting the password wrong message.
Hope this helps some.
Only had mine two days and it started to go wrong when I tried to connect to another iTunes account. Now, like many of you, I have full WiFi showing, but it won't connect to the internet. Tomorrow I will be calling Apple Support and if they can't help me, it'll be a 300 kilometer train ride to the nearest Apple store where I bought it and getting a full refund!
What an expensive piece of crap!!
I personally just can't believe Apple would let us down like this! I'm sure most of us would have had the time to wait a little longer for it to come out and not go through this trouble. If they hadn't quite finished the product, then they shouldn't have let the news leak to the press which then pressurised them to release it!
The strange thing is that for me, it connects fine in some of my friend's houses but not in mine! It was working perfectly well with my wireless before but it just suddenly stopped working for me!
I had the same sort of issue. Could not get any apps to connect to wifi. Had full bars and IP etc looked fine. Checked brightness, reset network settings. No go! Then as somebody suggested I rebooted my network gateway and I'm back. Yay!
I had exactly the same problem and tried updating the router firmware, router reset etc. without success. My wireless internet radio and my laptop was working fine but the iPad refused to join my WiFi network.
Here's what worked for me - My router is a Cisco Linksys WAG160N but this 'fix' may work for other models.
Go to Wireless / Wireless MAC Filter and set this to 'Disable'. Save your settings and try the iPad again.
IMPORTANT - Write down (or take a screen shot) your router configurations BEFORE you make any changes.
I encountered the exact same problem.....I plugged the ipad into my pc and did a sync and backup through itunes....wifi worked perfectly after that
i reset router and now everything is fine
had mine for 1 day, wifi connects but no internet...taking it back for a new one.
Nothing helping....correct password, but won't connect.
done everything possible ... abosolutely nothing..... 500 quid down the drain... thanks alot apple.
As an FYI:
The new iPad I just tested works thusly with a Netopia 2247-02 wireless router:
Privacy..........success
WEP............no
WPA-802.1x..no
none...........yes
WPA-PSK......yes...(WPA 1 and 2)
Best practice: Restrict access by MAC Address.
Hope this helps.
My iPad suddenly stopped connecting to my Linksys wireless router. Tried everything but what I should have tried first - reseting the router. It worked. Funny thing, the other wifi things in our home were still working fine. Guess teh iPad is finicky...
I live at a college campus and my iPad suddenly stopped working while I was at my friend's dorm. I thought my iPad just didn't like his WiFi but when I got back home I was still having problems. I had tried everything... then I just reset my router and the iPad reconnected. Guess it just wanted to take a nap.
i pad sucks
Thank you! Worked like a charm!
I had the exact same problem as described. Had the Ipad for a week and suddenly no internet connection despite full signal. Also, I have two other devices (macbook and pc) where internet works just fine.
I tried the reset network, renew, brightness to max and unpowering of the ipad. None of this worked but the solution was turning off and on the router.
I still have the other ipad-wifi issue: Very slow DL and streaming of videos although my macbook when connected to the same Wifi works fine.
the brightness thing worked for me. I restarted my modem and did everything everyone said above. Super weird but typical I pad glitch...
The Brightness fix worked for me too! How annoying ! Thanks everyone !!

Thanks James !!!
Mac address control needing disabling on my router. Problem solved!
awh! I HATE THIS. I TRIED THE BRIGHTNESS AND RESETING MY IPAD NOTHINGS WORKING!! What do you suggest I do!? I leave in a week for an out of town for 2 weeks I need to connect wi-fi for work and theirs nothing! I think i'm going to try reseting my router.
Used to not have problems but ever sincei started hooking up to other routers it's become a problem at home done the on off thing reset router connected and synced i've even played around with router setting and finally i tried a factory restore i've lost so much data it's stupid and i still don't have wi-fi, is apple doing anything to fix this?
I had the problem with unable to join network. I went through all of the above suggestions nothing worked. I eventually just sat there trying to join the network and keeped pressing dismiss. Eventually it joined. I did this approx 15 times!!! Good luck!
Had my iPad for a week. WiFi works fine at home. At office, we have 2 wireless nets - 1 secure, the other open. iPad connects to the open one but not to the secure one. Password is correct. Tried Brightness trick - uh uh. May call Apple or go to the store. Drat.
Still think Jobs is a genius?? Please.....

I have reset my router, I have hit brightness, I did everything and it still won't connect to the internet. Extremely frustrating. I can't shut the MAC off on my router so I guess every other computer in my house and my Droid phone will get the pleasure of using my router/wifi and my iPad won't. Very frustrating.
I couldn't connect my iPad through wifi at all. The fix for me was to upgrade my wireless router firmware.
(using WPA/PSK, dlink DI-524)
PC, Macbook pro, xbox etc all connected fine, ipad was the only device that wouldn't work without the latest router firmware. (the router is a few years old).
The latest firmware was from 2008 so i suspect other pre-2008 wireless routers may need firmware updates for ipad to work.
I guess ipad doesn't have the backwards-compatibility that other devices all seem to have..
What does "Reset Network Settings" MEAN?
"Reset Router"? PLEASE assume tghat there are some utter morons out here? Thanks so much.
I am the above moron, and resetting the "network settings" did it for ME. All I then had to do was reenter my wifi password and sign in to the Itunes store. Now, I'm online (please let it last)!
still can't connect, i tried all of the above. I type my network password in and it just sits there saying "choose a network" with my network name checked off...this is so frustrating.
the WEP key worked!!
When my iPad won't connect to my wifi network, I found the iPad's MAC address in my router's Wireless MAC Filter under "Prevent PCs listed below from accessing the wireless network", but I most certainly didn't put it there. (My router is a linksys WRT160N)
Lemon pad.
thank you. my ipad could not locate any wi fi networks, even though i was in my house right next to it. resetting my network settings worked and it found the network immediately.
stuck. i get 'cannot open page - safari cannot open page because it is not connected to the internet'. ipad is clearly connected to internet because it has the wifi signal in the upper left corner next to ipad. help? I've been able to connect to vzw mifi but cannot get it to work on my smc home router.
Resetting router worked for me.
I have had my ipad for 1 week and still can't connect to the internet. I know my wifi works because my laptop, tv, and xbox connects to it. I tried all of the suggested fixes several times and nothing. I am very disappointed.
I've tried brightness, resetting router, unconnecting & reconnecting to wifi network & still am not able to connect to the internet. Wi-fi is connected, but unable to access interent...meanwhile every computer in my house is able to connect just fine.
Any suggestions?
Resetting the WIFI Network settings worked for me.
Thanks
Resetting my router worked for me...
In setting/general/about copy the Wi-Fi Address. Open AirPort Utility click Manual Setup. Under Access Control click + (to add) under MAC address: put the Wi-Fi address you copied from your iPad. In Description put the name of your iPad. Make sure time limit is set to Everyday - all Day. Click Done. Go to your iPad and put in your password and now it will connect. Hopes this helps. This is for Apples AirPort.
*****OMG. It says enter the "password" but they are really asking for what is called the "SECURITY KEY."
Try this, it worked for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARGH. Wasted so many hours.
Totally agree with comments re using the SECURITY KEY not your oassword. Worked first time after putting my 'password' in a million times only to be told 'unable to connect'
I have 2 laptops & 1 iPad2 and all needed different ways to connect.
HP Lapop (XP) would only connect using the 'wizard' and my password
HP Laptop (Vista) connected with password & iPad with securiy key. Good luck
Thank you! I reset the network settings as suggested and it worked!
This is another disconnect in communications between ATT & Apple. I encountered this problem. None of the books helped. They brightness comments were irrelevant. On my ATT IPAD for WIFI when it asks for password, I was entering system password for the ATT Modem. What they want is NOT system password but wireless network key. Why can't they say what they mean when writing instructions. I am a PC User in general for this reason. They send you the box with no instructions. People say they buy Apple because they are easier on the learning curve....I DON'T THINK SO. Len Trimlett
Aha...on my lynksys page, it has the term "passphrase" under wireless/wireless security. That is what it wanted
Tried all the above but still not working.
I notice that when I look on my iphone and my imac at the network settings the numbers are the same for the ip address but they are different on my ipad - is this significant?
these stupid website are a waste of time it never works i called apple and they didnt even know wat the heck they were doing all they say is "umm ummmm" like hello u work there, yet ur as smart as a monkey. i reset my network because the youtube was effed up like always and it would not get out of browser mode n i couldnt watch any videos b/c u need flash which apple doesnt allow or have. anyways after i reset the network i am currently unable to connect to it anymore :( i cant even use the ipad anymore this is bs. :@
The brightness in "Settings" DID work... nothing else did. Make sure you turn "auto-brightness" OFF. Turning off the router and turning it back on also helped.
I tried the brightness fix but that didn't seem to work so I just unplugged the router and plugged it back in, WHICH WORKED! It's so weird because my MacBook was getting an internet connection before doing so. I guess it doesn't matter since it now works! Yay! Thank you :)
Really apple wants 179 dollars to get customer service
Yea!!!!!! I know right.....apple sells ipads for a truck load......with faulty kinks in them to begin with...then suckers u into getting customer service
Lol^^^^^^^thats what u get with apple
If you reset your router do you have to put the passwords in for everything that was connected to it ?!
On the iPhone, doing the brightness fix worked for me. On the iPad, entering 8.8.8.8, 8.8.8.4 in the DNS address field worked for me too.
But I agree it's a mess. What the !!!! does brightness have to do with WiFi?
Brightness worked! !! Wtf??
Thought i was going mad-have been trying for 3 weeks to connect new ipad-Aaaahhhh!
Still no joy
Thought it was our internet connection!
Brightness fix worked for me, didn't think it would. Totally mental!
Tried everything mentioned still hopeless.
Won't let me to join any wifi networks.
Such a piece of cap -,-
Forget Network worked. Mine kept disconnecing from network and i had to keep re-entering PW. Forget Network re-enter PW and everything returned to normal still a bit annoying that it kept forgetting network even when internet was still connected!
another problem is that, it automatically connect to a wireless network avaible and not able to connect to another wireless network available even when the network it is connect to is not working
What a waste of time and money.
Why oh why does apple always tell us to check everything else first? Does it make logical sense that NO OTHER PRODUCT but thiers is having a problem. But of course it cant be something thier snifty new upgraded ios5 isnt doing.
How about they learn to make their system smarter because we all wont put up with this. Go for it Mr. Google. I havent heard of any android having these problems yet and the tablets cost 50% less and do so much more.
What in the world was I thinking?
Reset network settings by selecting Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
That was the key to get connected, the ipad2 must have been hanging on to a previous password.
Thanks for a good article.
I reset my router and now all fine. Thanks everyone!
The resetting worked! Thanks! Not even my internet provider could help me with this but you did. Much appreciated.
TRY THIS FIRST BEFORE GOING THROUGH THE RESETING STEPS !!!!!
WOW this thread is huge and full of usefull info. I wanted to let everyone know I had the same internet connection issue and tried all of the resetting steps given. The one thing that actually fixed my problem right away was to unplug my my Network Router and then plug it back in. BAM, IPAD connected.
I manually created a connection, picked the encryption and retried. That worked for me.
